Protecting the Vulnerable

Vulnerable members of our community need extra protections and support. Children and seniors are often part of this population.

The first line of protection for our children is the in-school resource officers. School resource officers need to be able to form a connection with their students so they feel comfortable coming to them when they are having problems. Whether they are being harassed online, or being abused, that deputy is there to help. But that deputy also needs to be able to intervene and stop a threat when it comes to the school. Those are two very different skills and we build those skills through outstanding training.

Children aren’t the only vulnerable members of our community. I will start a program where senior citizens who want to remain in their homes can sign up for a member of the Sheriff’s Office to contact them each day to check in. This simple act of reaching out can give that senior citizen and their family peace of mind.

I will ensure the Sheriff’s Office is providing education about fraud cases which target our senior citizens, but the education isn’t just for seniors. We will also provide that education for business owners and their employees who sell gift cards, which are often used to transfer the money to the fraudster.
